LA COSTA CHICA - OAXACA

The Costa Chica lies on the Pacific coast in the state of Oaxaca, México. Where the rugged mountains of the Sierra Madre del Sur meet the blue Pacific waters... a coast of sheltered bays, small islets and protected beaches.

The region has a warm subtropical climate on the coastal plane, and a more temperate climate higher up. The population is an incredible pastiche of mestizos, Mixtec, Zapotec, Amuzgo, Chatinos, Chontal, and Afro-Mexicans.

  • South of the city of Oaxaca, 159 miles on the Federal Highway, on the way to San Pedro Pochutla.Approximately 5:30 hours of drive.
  • This is a crescent beach of golden sand, temperate blue water and gentle waves.
  • The ocean is shallow enough to make for good snorkeling, and calm enough to make swimming enjoyable.

Huatulco, Oaxaca

Playas-Oaxaca-Huatulco
  • Located on the coast of the state of Oaxaca at the edge of the Sierra Madre mountains, Huatulco spans 20 miles of Mexico’s Pacific coastline, between the Coyula and Copalita rivers. Huatulco is just 140 miles from the city of Oaxaca – though you'll have to cross a winding mountain range to get there – and a 50 minute flight from Mexico City.
  • In the 1980s, the government tourism development agency (Fonatur) began planning the area's main resort, and in 1988 the Bahias de Huatulco (bays of Huatulco) National Park was declared a protected reserve with a world-class tourism infrastructure of luxury hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, discos, and golf courses and a small urban zone called La Crucecita.

Mazunte, Oaxaca

Playas-Oaxaca-Mazunte
  • A kilometer west of San Agustinillo, Mazunte has a fine, curving, sandy beach, an interesting turtle center, and a variety of basic and fancier places to stay and eat.
  • The village is well known as a traveler's hangout and has a number of foreign residents, attracted either by the area's beauty or, as one put it, the 'old-time hippie vibe’.
  • The economic mainstays used to be turtle meat and eggs: after the turtle industry was banned in 1990, attempts were made to turn Mazunte into a kind of model ecotourism village.

Zipolite, Oaxaca

Playas-Oaxaca-Zipolite
  • A beautiful 1.5 km stretch of pale sand, 2.5km west of Puerto Ángel, moves at a slow pace, withering in the midday heat. It's the perfect option for budget beach bums in southern Mexico, attracting an international class of sun lovers, shirtless yoga gurus and surfers.
  • Zipolite has a certain overstated fame as a nudist beach; in fact, total nudity is common only at the western end of the beach and in the small cove called Playa del Amor at the east end.

Oaxaca, Oaxaca

Playas-Oaxaca-Oaxaca
  • With a beautiful colonial core of lovely, tree-shaded streets and highly creative artistic, culinary and craft scenes, Oaxaca is one of Mexico's most captivating cities.
  • Artists and artisans alike are inspired by the area’s deep-rooted indigenous traditions and by its bright, clear southern light. Oaxaca has top-class museums, charming inns, fascinating markets, a clutch of good language schools and its own exhilarating version of Mexican cuisine.

Monte Albán, Oaxaca

Playas-Oaxaca-Monte-Alban
  • The ancient Zapotec capital of Monte Albán stands on a flattened hilltop 400m above the valley floor, just a few kilometers west of Oaxaca.
  • It's one of the most impressive ancient sites in Mexico, with spectacular 360-degree views. This strategic position was doubtless one of the reasons why the ancient Zapotecs chose this site for their capital. Its name, Monte Albán, means White Mountain.
